A bit 30′s and 40′s Poster Art

This bank holiday weekend me and Rob went along to the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. The museum is known for being the European centre of aviation history and is home to an arey of flying machines from Spitfires, Lancaster Bombers to American combat aircrafts and masses more.

It was a shame that today, of all days, I forgot to take my camera. This means I cant share with you any of the great illustrations/art work I saw painted on the sides of the planes. Shucks!

Instead, at the end of the day I did have a wander around the gift shop and found these great war posters form the 1940′s. I love the quirky messages and bold typography, as well as the use of colour and iconic 1940′s illustration conveying the strong messages of the times.

Postcards of “Dr Carrot guards your health” and “I’m an Energy Food! Says Potato Pete” – British poster, II Word War – Imperial War Museum

James Fitton’s – “Turn Over a New Leaf” and anonymous “Save Kitchen Scraps to feed the Hens!” – The Imperial War Museum

“Save Bread and You Save Lives – Serve Potatoes and You Save the County” and “Eat Less Bread” – British poster 1921 – Imperial War Museum

Going all crafty with “I like Sleeping”

I was lucky enough to have the work of “I Like Sleeping” shown to me by @topleftdesign the other week and I instantly loved it!

“I Like Sleeping” is the brain child of illustrator Hanako Clulow and her work is a mixture of collage, hand drawings, stitch and much more.

Her nieve style of illustration is character-full and compelling and her use of textures through different mediums (print, paint, pencil etc) gives depth to her work.

I adore her bear pieces in particular.

Waldo Pancake

I got to know about this great little shop/website after seeing Keren’s face (of Top Left Design) light up after she had bought a few pieces from their Liverpool Street store.

Waldo Pancake, not only has a great name but also sells the coolest stationary, greeting cards, bags and house wear I have seen for a while!

The products are usually brightly coloured and use lots of dry humor. The rather rounded typeface also adds to the over all quirkiness of each item on sale.

Some of the sentences on the items use sarcasm and even satire to generate a belly laugh from the lucky receiver of one of their products.

Have a gander at their website and also see some pics of their products taken from their site below.

Pulp Fiction in typography

I was lucky enough to have this great You Tube clip sent to me last week by the lovely Amy at Top Left Design. It shows a cool typographic animation of a scene from the film Pulp Fiction.

Take a look at the clip above and some stills from the animation below:
