Colours’ Attack

Back in July I went to the East End of London to have a gander at some of the many graduate shows and exhibitions being held there.

Around the Old Truman Brewery area there was a uber cool exhibition called “Colours’ Attack“. The show was a “Pop Set” exhibition by Arjowiggins Creative Papers and featured more than 100 C-Myk paper toys that were all hand crafted. Each was being sold in support of UNESCO “Award of Excellence for Handicrafts”.

As well as being able to view artists creations people were invited to make toys to showcase at the event too. The website also encourages artists from all over the word to submit there designs online.

A pre-made template is provided for each toys and it seems that you can add your own touchers to make your toy personal to you. It is super creative as you can see from the examples below.

Have a peek at the website’s gallery which showcases some of the pieces already submitted.

Below are some more images from the exhibition.

Illustration at Guinness

Last month Rob and I went over to Dublin for a weekend break. One of the things we wanted to see whilst over there was the Guinness Storehouse in the heart of Dublin. It was a great place and took you through the brewing process of the world famous beverage.

On the 5th floor, just before we got our complimentary Guinness from the Gravity Bar (which has the best panoramic view of Dublin), we found a room dedicated to John Gilroy who illustrated some of Guinness’s best know advertisements. For some reason the Guinness Pelican ads always come to mind for me.

John Gilroy was an artist, illustrator and a very good draftsman who worked in advertising, the greeting card industry, portraiture and much more. He had many strings to his bow but one of his greatest accomplishments must have been the work he produced for the world famous Guinness brand. Gilroy produced over 100 press advertisements and around 50 poster designs for Guinness over 35 years.

In the exhibition we got to see his working scratches, colured artwork and the final advertisement pieces. I was amazed by the amount of detail in each illustration plus the  sheer size of the artwork produced. It was so nice to see his work preserved in such a way as it’s un-doubtably a great example of illustration used in advertising.

For more infomation about John Gilroy please visit www.guinntiques.com/gilroy

Below are some photo’s I took while walking around the exhibition. I hope you like them as much as I do!

VolksWorld Show

At the weekend I took my self off to the VolksWorld Show down at Sandown Park, Easher.

The VolksWorld Show is a two day exhibition dedicated to the world of Volkswagens! They show mainly campervans and Beetle’s and they have some real classics on show.

To those of you who don’t know already I have a huge thing about VW split screen campervans!! My dream is that one day, in the not so distant future (I hope) I will have one of my very own!

I have been to a few VW events over the past few years such as Big Bang, Brighton Breeze and of course the VolksWorld Show. I love to see the camaraderie between VW owners and there is a big sense of community at all their events.

At The VolksWorld show they exhibit a range of vans and Beetle’s including those in preteen and mint condition as well as those that are not!

Most vans have a story to tell and have been lovingly brought back to life by their dedicated owners over a number of years. One such owner had a big sign saying that his van had cost him, a trip to hospital, lots of money, and his wife! These guys and gals are dedicated!

A few years ago I did a project at university on VW camper vans and below are some examples of the work I produced. Hope you like them!

Cubs the word at the Ideal Home Show

This weekend I was lucky enough to go along to the Ideal Home Show at Earls Court with the Top Left Design team. The show runs for a week and shows the very best of home-ware, interiors, gardening, home improvements and much more.

We spent a bit of time wandering around but one of the big attractions for me was the “Show Home Village” where Cub Housing Solutions were exhibiting 2 of there brand new homes. I was lucky enough to work on their website design at Top Left Design and we were all invited along to see the homes in real life.

For more information about Cub Housing Solutions visit their website.

Shelter House of Cards exhibition

I entered the Amelia’s Magazine, Shelter Card Quilt competition way back in June 2009 and my work was picked to appear in the final piece produced by Amelia and her team.

Amelia’s Magazine along with other artists and celeb’s were given a playing card as a theme to produce a piece of work for the exhibition. Their theme was the two of hearts. Amelia’s Magazine decided to open the brief up to budding illustrators like myself and asked them to design a piece of work inspired by the 2 of hearts. They then chose 50ish designs and patch worked them together to create a two of hearts quilt!

You can see examples here in this link.

My work will be featured alongside 49 lucky illustrators and designers. The finished piece was exhibited along side other famous works held at the Haunch of Venison Gallery in Burlington Gardens, London W1S 3ET. The works were later auctioned off to raise money for Shelter.

The show ran from the 24th-28th September 2009.
