Spellbinding Harry Potter graphic design

Spellbinding Harry Potter graphic design

This week, I took the other half to Harry Potter World at Leavesden Studio’s. We saw many magical things from sets used in the films, actors costumes, contraptions, prosthetics and much much more.

One of the most intriguing parts of the tour for me, was getting to see all the props that the Graphics Department had made. These guys were involved in lot of things we take for granted in the 8 films. They designed school books, hand written potion labels, became the unofficial Editor in Chiefs for the “Quibbler” and even designed the Hogwarts School Crest.

I love the illustrative style the team created and the humour that comes across in their work. Take a look at some of the packaging designs they created for the “Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes” shop located at Number 93 Diagon Alley.

I also really like the way the wizarding newspaper “The Daily Prophet” has been designed and laid out. It’s broadsheet appearance and mass of ornate looking text stamps instant authority.

If you read some of the news items closely you can also see lots of hints from the muggle world with wizarding touches such as the competition section to win ”VIW” (Very Important Witch) backstage passes.

The big family Fabergé Egg Hunt!

Fabergé Egg Hunt

As it’s Easter, I thought it would be a perfect time to blog about last weekends Fabergé Egg Hunt!

Just before I “eggsplain” about our day, I would like to tell you a bit about The Big Egg Hunt and how it all came about. Last year, some of you may have seen the highly decorated elephants dotted around London town (I even blogged about a few). Well, this year the Elephant Family and Action for Children charities decided to do a record-breaking egg hunt around London to raise money. You can read more about the egg hunt here.

Fabergé Egg Hunt

Our  egg hunt started with an “eggciting” family briefing with Gemma outside Harrods, Knightsbridge. It was there that we were assigned our team names and “eggsplained” the agenda for the day. The Webster’s were called team “Eggcelence”, headed up by captain Lisa. And the Punshon’s, named team “Eggcitable” were lead by Ceri.

The plan was to find as many hidden eggs around Knightsbridge, Sloan Square, Piccadilly, Carnaby Street and Covert Garden. The race was on, and it’s fair to say that it brought out our competitive sides in both families!

As well as it being a fun filled, family day out we also got to see lots of lovely designed eggs as part of our hunt! Here are some I snapped along the way.

As you can see from my photo’s, there was an “eggstensive” variety of designs on display. We didn’t get to see them all, but you can see the full list of egg, artists and designers on their website.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day, and I’m already looking forward to seeing what the Elephant Family and Action for Children charities decide to do next year!

Pinterest - Owls collection by Keren Lerner

Recently, I’ve been introduced to the wonderful world on Pinterest, and I LOVE it! It’s like having your very own vitual pin board full of all the things that inspire you. I registered for my own account today, and I have a few ideas as to what I’m going to be pinning up.

Keren Lerner at Top Left Design has been very busy creating her own inspiration boards. I love her Owl collection, and thought I would make a perfect blog post after my recent “Owly” illustration.

Keren has also written a very interesting post about Pinterest, and it’s well worth a read!

Here are a few images from her board.

5 Christmas markets in London - a blog post by London Microguides

5 Christmas markets in London - a blog post by London Microguides

I was on Twitter this weekend and I had a tweet from the lovely Magaret Webster at London Microguides. She told me about her latest blog post, “Christmas Markets in London“. Both Margaret and I thought it would make a great addition to my “12 days of Christmas” posts I’ve been doing over the past few days.

In the post, Margaret talks about 5 festive markets that have popped up around London. She goes in to details about what stalls, crafts and goodies can be found there. You can also find the address, dates/times and information about admission fees (if any).

Have a read of the full blog post here.

London Microguides

London Microguides is a guidebook that helps Londoners and visitors enjoy their Christmas and New Year in the city.

Margaret Webster, author of the guide came up with the idea after reading a Polish guidebook whilst on her holidays. She in many ways wished that the guidebook included hyperlinks to more information about hotels and attractions. It was at this point that she thought about writing her first e-guidebook with hyperlinks about London.

Her e-book “London for Christmas and New Year 2011″ is available to preview and buy on Amazon.

Keep an eye on the London Microguides site and blog for more fun things to do this Christmas and New Year in London.

Just to let you know, I’m writing this while listening to Thriller by MJ! Happy Halloween weekend people!

Well here he is, I introduce Pip the Pumkin, he’s my first ever carved pumpkin and I think he’s looking pretty pleased with himself! I’ve got him sat near me illuminating my front room while I blog about him.
